Microsoft Power Map is a three-dimensional (3-D) data visualisation tool that interfaces with Bing Maps. Presenting our data on such detailed and interactive maps allows us to discover new insights – proximity to major cities, roads and rivers  for example. The only requirement is our data contains at least one piece of Geospatial data (Post Code/Zip Code, City, County, Country/Region, Longitude, Latitude etc.)

Power Map reports can be created using data that resides in Excel or a Power Pivot Data Model.

Each Power Map report is called a Tour and each Tour consists of one or multiple Scenes.

Each Scene can represent one or multiple measures with the data presented in one of five forms (stacked column, clustered column, bubble, heat map or region map). We can even apply date/time dimension to see how our data has changed with time.

Power Map reports can be shared with other users via Excel, via Screen Shots or as an mp4 video presentation. The tool even gives the report author the option of adding music to video presentations.

Example Power Map report with multiple Scenes created by us.

  • Scene 1: Two layers (Column and Heat Map visuals)
  • Scene 2: Single layer (Bubble visuals)
