An Introduction to Power View for Excel

Power View is a free add-in for Excel (versions 2013 and later). Power View is also a feature of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and 2013. The Power View interface looks and works in exactly the same in both Excel and SharePoint.

Power View is a powerful data exploration tool that can be used to create highly visual and interactive reports directly in Excel. Power View is very much a self-serve BI tool aimed at all abilities including those with little to no BI experience.

Power View can present data in many different visualisations including; tables, bar charts, column charts, line charts, pie charts, 2-D maps and animated bubble charts… name a few!

When it comes to formatting a report; Power View gives the developer approx. 50 themes to choose from. Each theme has a colour pallet and font face associated to it. Microsoft have deliberately kept the formatting options available to the report author to a minimum; and in doing so have made the tool as simple to use as possible.

The limited features and functionality may be seen as a short coming by some but Power View still offers enough to keep even the experienced BI developer happy

Please note: Power View in Excel cannot be connected directly to a multi-dimensional SQL Server Analysis Cubes. A tabular Power Pivot data model must be introduced to connect these two components. Also Power View isn’t available in Office on a Windows RT PC.
