Creating Picture Charts in Excel

I had a conversation with a couple of work colleagues the other day regarding Excel Picture Charts, so I thought I would have a go at creating a few.

I’m pretty pleased with the finished result (see fig i) which took less than 1 hour to produce; which included time to obtain and prepare the data.

The basic columns are replaced with images by selecting Format Data Series from the Right Click Menu and setting the Fill to Picture or texture fill and then selecting an image using the Insert picture from buttons (see fig ii). There’s a bit more work involved to get the charts looking as they do below but its well worth it I think.

The below also features a Power Pivot Slicer (City) and a Power Pivot data model in the backend. The whole solution was developed in Excel 2013 using standard Excel features.
